Forest School for Kids
Wildside Survival are proud to offer a Forest School for children in Spain. Places are now available in one of our weekend groups and during school holidays. Each weekend group meets for two hours and is action packed with fun, learning, games and education in outdoor skills.
Due to the popularity of forest school, we now have a sister site: www.forestschoolspain.com which is dedicated to just forest school activities.
Saturdays: 10am until 12 noon
Our Instructors/Leaders are fully UK trained and experienced Forest Leaders, experienced in teaching forest skills and basic survival/bushcraft to young people and adults in the UK. Previously employed by County Councils to work with groups of children, we have personal knowledge of the many positive benefits that forest school groups can give to children.
Our Forest School Club has been designed with the local environment in mind. Though 'forests' is a term we use, you will be aware that local areas are not the same as forests in the UK etc., therefore we have adapted some of the activities to suit our local land.
Forest schools are a type of outdoor education in which children (or adults) visit forests/woodlands, learning personal, social and technical skills. Forest Schools have been defined "an inspirational process that offers children, young people and adults regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence through hands-on learning in a woodland environment".
Forest schools use the woods and forests as a means to build independence and self esteem in school-age children. Topics are cross-curriculum (broad in subject) including the natural environment, for example the role of trees in society, the complex ecosystem supported by a wilderness, and recognition of specific plants and animals. However, the personal skills are considered highly valuable, such as teamwork and problem solving. The woodland environment may be used to learn about more abstract concepts such as mathematics and communication. Forest schools are also called nature schools.
This is an educational fun club - encouraging children to learn about nature and the environment in an educational and fun atmosphere.
The Wildside Forest School Activities include: Walks, nature trails, building a camp, basic first aid, building a camp fire (under close supervision and in a designated safe area) and cooking, races, games, making a hammock, plant identification, tree and stone rubbings, paper mache pot making, camoflage games/hide and seek and lots more - they'll love our base camp!
Adventurers have fun from the moment they arrive, there are plenty of games and activities that encourage team work, build self confidence and self esteem. We work on a program that we have designed through our own work with youngsters in the UK and France.
This group is open to both boys and girls from 4-10 years of age. Children are supervised at all times.
They will get messy! Please remember to pack spare clothes and ensure your child/ren has mountain boots/wellie boots for protection of their feet.
There is an enrolment fee of 20 euros per child which includes your child/rens Wildside Adventurers Forest School Tee shirt, badges and certificates as they work through our program. A monthly fee of 30 euros per child or 25 euros each if there are more than one in a family cover all costs of food, drinks and materials needed. Places are limited so please let us know if your child/ren are interested.
We will also be offering school holiday day camp activities. Please contact us for further details.
We also have an occasional 'camp night' - letters will be sent out in plenty of time, its great fun for the children to help build their own camp and have a fun night sleeping in sleeping bags etc.
Please use our contact form or telephone 646 913 917 for bookings/details.

"A Forest School is a particular approach to outdoor play and learning. The philosophy is to encourage and inspire children of any age through positive outdoor experiences. This approach raises levels of self-esteem. It develops skills in co-operation and listening, empathy and enthusiasm for learning. It also aids children’s understanding, appreciation and care for our natural environment. Although aimed mainly at children, it is a valuable experience for anyone. The benefits increase when there are regular Forest School sessions."
Activities will include:- hide & seek, den building, picture making, bug hunting, collecting & sorting, singing, listening, observing growth & decay, noting changes in seasons, leaf printing, tree rubbing and many more. Materials will include:- mud, sticks, logs, leaves, stones, string, collecting boxes, magnifying glasses, tarpaulins, books, pictures, paper, charcoal, sand, water and imagination.

"Forest School is an inspirational process that offers children and young people regular opportunities to develop self confidence and self esteem through hands on learning experiences in a local woodland setting. Forest Schools originated in Scandinavia in the 1950s as a way of teaching about the natural world. By the 1980s it became an integral part of the Danish early years programme. It became clear that these woodland based activities helped develop children's confidence, self esteem and teamwork skills. A study in 2005 concluded " .. the benefits for all the children who took part were significant - they all saw great improvements in their abilities to listen and communicate. I don't know what it is about an outdoor environment, but away from the classroom they become lot more relaxed. They are taking risks and this gives them confidence." The value of Forest Schools is child led learning, based on small, achievable tasks. Children have the freedom to explore the ever changing environment, to take risks and assess risks for themselves. Being outside 'touches something deep' within children, stimulating imagination and the senses; thereby building foundations for further learning. It is intended to be an integral part of the child's curriculum; a continuing, evolving experience."

“The amount of time and contact children have with nature is declining; fewer than 10% now play in natural places such as woodlands . . . compared with 40% of children 40 years ago. Research shows that children who are introduced to nature will continue to visit natural landscapes in adulthood and be committed to retaining them.” Observer Magazine 10 January 2010
